Grade: K-2
Age: 4-7

Submitted by: J R Williams, a homeschooler from Slater, Iowa.

Learning Objectives:

Identification:
  • Students will read the Eric Carle Book (or watch the video): The Very Hungry Caterpillar.
Creation:
  • Students will create an egg carton caterpillar.
Appreciation:
  • Students will learn to appreciate the art created not only by them, but by others as well.

What You Need:

  • The Very Hungry Caterpillar BOOK and/or VIDEO
  • egg cartons
  • pipe cleaners
  • googly eyes (from the craft store)
  • glue
  • markers
  • small brown lunch sacks
  • thin glue
  • colored tissue paper
  • scissors
  • wax paper

What You Do:

  1. Watch the video or read the book.

  2. Take the egg cartons and cut them so each child has a section three eggs long.

  3. Encourage your students to attach pipe cleaners for antennas, glue eyes on and color with markers.

  4. When finished, they can put their caterpillars in brown paper sacks and attach them to a bulletin board

  5. Count down for 14 days.

  6. On the 14th day your students can make a tissue paper butter fly by gluing down sections of tissue paper to the sheet of wax paper.

  7. When the tissue paper is dry, they can cut it into the shape of a butterfly.

  8. Replace their paper sacks with the newly dried butterfly.
