ART HISTORY TEACHING TIP

Submitted by: Patricia Murray, Art Teacher

Teaching Tip

When I begin teaching my students about a particular period or style of art I ask them to close their eyes and imagine that we are being transported back to that period of time.

I then read a colorful descriptive background for our travels. This is where the students own imagination takes over.

Fron this point own we discuss the artist and time period and what they imagined it would be like to have been a friend of the artist and to have lived in that artist's life time.

I have found that this makes the students not just observers or listeners but active participates.

My students have grown to really enjoy art history with this method.
