Teaching Tip
We watch a PBS show about Dale Chihuly, and we discuss how this medium (glass) is used in practical applications (windows, glasses, etc.), artistic applications (art glass) and how art & function can be combined (stained glass windows...).
We find examples in our home and school of glass in our environment.
While in our community, we search out creative uses of glass.
We either take digital pictures of these items, or we draw them into our sketch books.
We ask questions of other people pertaining to their experiences with glass.
We study the effects of a prism on light.
We cut glass with my husband, who is a residential and commercial glazier.
We clean the windows of our home (all glass) and we use as many glass items as we can for daily activities.
We make "stained glass" dessert out of stiff jello, which we cut into various shapes and thicknesses.
We assemble these "edible works of art" on clear glass/plastic plates, then darken the room and shine a flashlight under each one.
The children really enjoy it.
