Teaching Tip
One of the most effective things that works for me is to submerge the children in everything about the culture we are studying.
When they enter the room, they hear the music that was made by that culture, and see examples of the art that was created by those people.
Most of the time I try to use real artifacts and spread them on the tables so students can touch them. However, that is not always available, so I find websites that have examples on them and create a slideshow of sorts.
I ask students to describe what they see and if appropriate the purpose of that piece of art.
Once we have done this activity, it seems to make the culture we are studying more real, instead of just a story that starts; "A long time ago..."
