Definition: This is the thing that stands out in the work - the emphasis in a portrait might be the person's eyes or maybe their mouth - it's the part that jumps out at you.

Pronunciation: em·fa·sis • (noun)

Definition: This is the ancient art of using colored wax for painting. Older than the sea - or so the saying goes - the encaustic technique involved painting images onto walls with pigment (colors) blended with wax which, when touched with very hot things like irons and such, would literally be burned into the wall ... for good.

Pronunciation: en·cause·tic • (noun)
