ICE CUBE RAINBOWS

Submitted by: Lori Barry, a preK teacher at Clearview IU20, in Stroudsburg, PA.

Skills/Objective:

Color recognition, Observe freezing

What You Need:

  • clear pitchers
  • spoons
  • water
  • food coloring
  • ice cube trays

What You Do:

  1. Decide how many colors you would like to make and have pitchers of clear water ready.

  2. Have children observe the clear water, then add one color to each pitcher, observe the color changes.

  3. Have children pour the colored water into ice cube trays, trying not to mix colors unless you want a secondary color

  4. Place trays in freezer.

  5. Remove after frozen. Have children pop the colored cubes out.

  6. Observe the new texture and have them arrange the pieces like a rainbow then allow the children to play with the cubes.
