OLD FISHERMAN Grade: 4-6 Age: 8-10
Submitted by: Christine Pang, a homeschooler from Hong Kong.
Objectives:
Creating a sculpture using PaperClay®
What You Need:
- a packet of paperclay®
- water paint or poster color, gloss paint
- a piece of thread
- a piece of thin wire
- plastic knife or toothpicks
What You Do:
- Take out a piece of paperclay®, about the size of a golf ball.
- Let the students roll and fold the paperclay® in their hands.
- Have them pull and push the paperclay® to release any air that is inside the clay.
- When the clay gets dry or hard to push, add one or two drops of water to the clay and repeat the above process.
- Flatten 1/3 of the clay to make the ground.
- Make some small balls of clay for rocks.
- Circle up the small rocks on the side of the ground as a pond.
- Put one or two bigger rocks next to the pond.
- Use the rest of the 1/3 of clay to shape an old fisherman sitting on one of the rock.
- Roll some clay onto a small piece of wire (1-1.5 inches long) as the fishing rock.
- Pin in the fishing rock into the hands of the fisherman.
- Fix the fisherman onto the rock with a piece of wire (pin one end of the wire into the fisherman's hip and the other end into the rock).
- The plastic knife or the toothpick can help to shape the minor parts of the model.
- All the parts can be "glued" together with a drop of water before they dry, if they are dried, then they can be "glued" together with white glue.
- Knot one end of the thread to the fishing rod, the other end stick into the pond.
- Let the model dry for 1-2 days.
- Paint the model with paint and add a coat of gloss paint to protect the model.
