MAGIC WANDS AND WAND HOLDERS
Written by: Anitra Redlefsen [Anitra is an artist and art instructor.]
Grade: 2 and up
Age: 6 and up
Activity Summary:
Students will create magic wands and wand holders using a wooden block, wooden dowel and paint.
Vocabulary:
Magic, adjective: Possessing distinctive qualities that produce unaccountable or baffling effects, such as with a Magic Wand!
What You Need:
- 1/2" doll rod, 16" long
- one, 1-1/2" wide piece of wood (ie pine), cut 3-1/2" long and 4" tall (a piece of 2x4 wood cut 4" high will do)
- a hole drilled in the top of the above piece of wood big enough for the 1/2" doll rod to rest loosely
- acrylic paint
- raffia
- ribbon
- feathers
- other craft supplies to decorate your wand
- masking tape
- paint brushes, containers and water
What You Do:
- Paint your wand (doll rod) first in one or two steps. You may want to paint all but the part you can hold, let it dry, then paint the rest. Set it aside to dry.
Idea: Use masking tape to make a striped design. Paint the unmasked areas. Remove the tape and paint the unpainted areas in a design.
- Paint your wand holder. You might want to paint a design or a picture. Use your imagination and have fun!
- After your wand is dry, decorate it by tying on ribbons, feathers and raffia. What else might you use to give your wand a festive look? Use anything! Be creative!
- Use your magic wand safely (do not point it directly at yourself or others in a way that would poke or hit or scratch).
- Make magic often, and then keep your wand in its holder in a special place where you can admire its beauty!
